Dancing to Your Own Rhythm
Dancing to Your Own Rhythm
As we celebrate the word of the month ‘independence’ this month at Pegasus Dance Studios, it's worth asking what independence really means and why are we talking about it?
We often celebrate independence as the destination. But I believe it is more.
Instead, let's think about independence as the ability to think for yourself, make wise choices, and have the confidence to live according to your values. Perhaps true independence isn't about doing everything on your own. Perhaps it's the freedom to become yourself.
Perhaps we've had it backwards, often celebrating independence as the goal, but I believe it begins somewhere else. It begins with belonging. When children know they are loved, accepted, and encouraged, they develop the confidence to become themselves.
Children first feel safe.
From there, they become curious.
Then they become capable.
Then they become confident.
And eventually, they become independent, not simply to stand on their own, but to take their place in the world.
Independence isn't simply learning to tie their shoes, carry their own dance bag, or remember the choreography. While those milestones are certainly worth celebrating, true independence runs much deeper.
It is the confidence to think for yourself and the courage to be yourself amidst all the noise. It is trusting your own voice, solving problems, persevering through challenges, and making choices that reflect your values, even when they're different from everyone else's. It is knowing who you are, choosing what is right for you, and taking ownership of those choices.
At Pegasus, we believe dance is about so much more than learning steps. Every class is an opportunity for children to make decisions, express ideas, work with others, overcome obstacles, and discover what they are capable of. These experiences quietly build the confidence that allows them to stand tall, trust themselves, and choose their own path.
It's easy to follow the crowd. True confidence comes from making decisions based on what feels right, not from pressure or the need to fit in.
This is one of the reasons I continue to be so passionate about early childhood dance education. The foundations of confidence, communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking begin long before children realize they are learning them. Through joyful movement and meaningful experiences, we are helping children develop skills they will carry with them for a lifetime.
Later this month, I'll be sharing these ideas with dance educators from across Canada in our Childhood Expressions™ workshop, The 4 C's in Motion: Building Future-Ready Children Through Early Childhood Dance. Together, we'll explore how dance can become a powerful tool for developing not only young dancers, but confident, capable, and compassionate human beings. This is not only my personal philosophy, it has become the Pegasus difference.
Because the goal isn't simply to help children dance well.
It's to help them live well.
As we move through the summer months, our children will experience new opportunities, embrace new challenges, and discover new parts of themselves. Their growing independence may test both them and us as parents, but each experience helps shape who they are becoming.
Let's celebrate the children who are discovering independence and not just following the crowd. For those who have the confidence to think for themselves, make thoughtful choices, and stay true to who they are.
Because when children learn to dance to their own rhythm, they're not just learning to dance, they're learning how to live. Let’s celebrate our children for who they are and who they are becoming.
Happy July!
With gratitude,
Jane
